Anger Management
Growing up, we are often taught that anger is a “bad” emotion to have or express. Often times, this may lead to negative feelings, such as shame, embarrassment, and sadness when we do feel or express our anger. However, anger - just like all emotions - is a healthy emotion to have or express if using the proper coping tools and skills.
When trying to understand anger, the iceberg metaphor can be helpful. Anger is the primary emotion (or tip of the iceberg), which is based off an initial reaction and tends to be what people see. Underneath the anger, there is typically a secondary emotion (bottom of the iceberg), that is hidden from others but can impact our emotions and feelings.
By identifying secondary emotions and implementing coping strategies and tools, anger can be expressed in a healthy manner and help move you forward on your emotional journey.
