International Women’s Day
Women’s Day is acknowledged across the world to increase awareness on the achievements that women have made politically, socially, and culturally, and create change on the inequitable disparities women face.
Why is International Women’s Day marked globally?
Women’s equity movements began in the early twentieth century which launched revolutionary changes to women’s rights. In 1908, the first recognition of National Women’s Day was organized by Socialist Party, following the protest against the labour conditions for women in the United States. The date of March 8 originated from the day women gained voting rights in Russia in the wake of the February Revolution in 1917. The date was later adopted by global feminist movements and was then made an official global holiday by the United Nations in 1977.
International Women’s Day 2023 #EmbraceEquity
The theme for Women’s Day this year is #EmbraceEquity. The International Women’s Day website details the theme is to focus on gender equity as a society explaining how “ it's critical to understand the difference between equity and equality” (International Women’s Day, 2023). “The IWD 2023 campaign theme drives worldwide understanding why equal opportunities aren't enough!” (IWD, 2023).
Equity means creating an inclusive world. There are many ways in which you can be a part of the change. You can create equity by challenging gender stereotypes, standing against discrimination, self-education on personal biases, and being an ally.
Another way to celebrate on March 8th or everyday is by supporting feminist business owners and charities in your region.
